Obsidian Interiors, which has offices in Cheltenham, has two designers who have advanced to the Designer Awards finals.
The judges of the annual national awards, which honour the best interior design work nationwide, were particularly impressed with the designs of Alison Evans and Lynsey Rowe.
In the category of “Bathroom Designer of the Year – Under £15k,” interior designer Lynsey Rowe, who has been employed by Obsidian for more than four years, is a finalist for her design of a bathroom tucked away beneath the eaves of a Victorian terraced house in Cheltenham.
Lynsey said:
“A huge amount of work goes into projects like this, so it is really rewarding to be recognised by the Design Awards. Social media has led many people to believe a project is as simple as a quick makeover and a ‘before and after’ shot, but it’s so much more. At Obsidian we pride ourselves on taking the time to really get to know our clients, asking about their likes and dislikes, their tastes, what they need the space to do and of course, making sure our design is in keeping with the rest of their house.”
Lynsey’s client said:
“I love it. It’s really different for me because everything in the rest of the house is very neutral, but my husband and I both wanted to go a little bit crazy and quirky with the bathroom in the loft and we’re thrilled with the results (in fact it is the only room in the house that we both love.) We didn’t do any amends to Lynsey’s design for the room at all; she asked us to trust her and we are so glad we did. When people see photos, the bathroom in the loft is always the one they comment on; everyone loves the tiles. We really hope Lynsey wins the award, she did such a great job for us and we’d be thrilled for her if she won.”
Alison Evans, a lead designer and showroom manager at Obsidian, is a finalist in the category of “Super Lux Project Design – Bathroom” for her work on a luxurious ensuite bathroom she built for an Edwardian family home in Cheltenham.
Her clients gave her the instruction that while the bathroom should be a focal point, the historic house’s original character should be preserved. Alison carried the Edwardian cornice and skirting from the original house into the new bathroom, which also included separate his and hers showers, sinks, and toilets, to maintain continuity. In order to create a feature wall with a free-standing bath at the entrance, a stud wall was built. Alison then utilised book-matched porcelain tiles on the walls, which were concealed by slide-back pocket doors.
Alison said:
“I really enjoyed working on this project, mindful not only of the client’s brief for a luxurious, show-stopping space but also ensuring we kept the Edwardian features. My clients wanted double sinks, showers and toilets so there was quite a lot to fit in. I installed a stud wall to help break up the space. They were nervous about the use of too much pattern but when I asked them to trust me they did and were delighted with the finished look.”
Alison’s client said:
“We knew we wanted our new bathroom to be a showstopper but apart from that we didn’t know what styles or colours we wanted. Alison spent time getting to know us and finding out what we liked and didn’t like, then put forward lots of ideas. Our master en-suite now really has the wow factor we were hoping for. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Alison if you are looking for quality and individuality.”

Obsidian Interiors have been shortlisted for the prestigious Bathroom Award in the International Design and Architecture Awards 2022. Design et al only work with the world’s leading designers and we are honoured to have been shortlisted. Our head of design Alison Evans designed these beautiful bathrooms that blend modern living with the Edwardian features of this classic property in regency Cheltenham.
The design began as a blank canvas with a few key requirements from our client. The most important aspects we wanted to convey were elegance in a light and airy atmosphere, ensuring meticulous attention to detail. A stunning flow was established through the bathrooms from the rest of the house, creating a unique style with elegance and opulence that been shortlisted into the design et al awards.

International Awards
Our lead designer and showroom manager Alison Evans has reached the finals of The Design Awards in the category of ‘Ultimate Luxury Bathroom Design of the Year’ and the ‘Kitchen Designs Over £50,000 Award’, in the International Design and Architecture Awards.
Colleague and fellow designer Lynsey Rowe reached the finals of the Design Awards in the ‘Designer of the Year – Bathroom under £20,000’ category.
All builds were completed at private homes in Gloucestershire in 2019 before COVID-19.
Commenting on reaching the finals Alison said,
‘It’s amazing to be recognised for our hard work; we’ve always had a reputation for great designs, great product and a reliable team and we’re thrilled to be finalists in these prestigious awards. We are lucky enough to work on some fabulous Cotswolds properties, with clients who appreciate luxury and style. These nominations are as much for our builders and installers as they are for the designers; every project we complete is a team effort and we couldn’t do it without them.’

Following the disruption to foreign travel by COVID, building and interior design businesses such as ours have seen a sharp rise in trade, as customers choose to spend their money on home improvements instead of holidays.
Reflecting on the increase in activity Alison said,
‘Things are really busy for us right now; with the Neff offer and people taking less holidays, we’re seeing a host of new clients come through the door of the showrooms; they are very design-orientated with exacting standards and we’re loving working with them.’
During lockdown we developed a new website, showcasing our designs and interior design services.
